[Archived Tim News 1999] Other Archives - 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000 11 December 1999 - Wedded Bliss.... As most of you will have seen on the UK news last night, Tim and Lucy finally tied the knot at Lucy's family church in Hampshire yesterday afternoon in a candle lit service fixed for 4 pm. Tim arrived nice and early and looked splendid in his dark morning suit and Lucy looked a picture in her white/ivory wedding gown. Henmagicers will be pleased to know that details of both weddings will be appearing in the next edition of Henmagic which will go to print at the end of next week and will hopefully be out before Christmas... 5 December 1999 - Greg and Lucy are happily married - It's Tim and Lucy's turn next weekend! The tennis year is finally over. Pete has been crowned ATP World Champion again and Australia have won the Davis Cup. All that is left is Tim's wedding which will take place in Hampshire next weekend. More news on this subject as and when we get it. Tim's first tournament for 2000 will be in Adelaide. (For the first time in 3 years, he will forgo the Qatar Open in Doha where he reached the final last year, to start the year off in Australia. Other known entrants so far are Thomas Enqvist and injury permitting, Pat Rafter. 12 November - 1999 now over for Tim as far as Tennis is concerned So it is all over (officially) for another year. Tim easily beat Austrian Stefan Koubek in the first round of the Scania Open in Stockholm but could not break the jinx of playing Jan-Michael Gambill. The American who plays double handed on both sides has Tim's number at present and won their encounter in 3 sets. Now all that is left is THE WEDDING! 8 November - Stockholm Draw News Tim has a long week ahead. With the Hanover 8 now released officially, Tim can get to the Alternate's position (9th) if he makes the final. However the draw for Stockholm shows Tim will have to work really hard to get there. First he plays Stefan Koubek (which should be quite easy) then next up is either Arnaud di Pasquale (DIP to his mates) or Jan-Michael Gambil (Hollywood to his mates).&nbs 7 October - Tim shows his Championship Mettle to beat Medvedev Tim had to fight back from a set and a break down to beat wily Ukrainian Andre Medvedev in Basel earlier tonight. At times in the first set, Tim looked like the No.106 but from 3-4 down in the second set, he was rejuvenated and lost only one point on serve thereafter. He won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 and will play either Popp or Federer in the next round. Earlier winners included Agassi (from 3 match points down), Rusedski, Kafelnikov, Ivanisevic, Kucera and Kiefer. 6 October - Tim wins testing match in Basel After a few early mishaps against Swiss wildcard Georg Bastl, Tim came through to win his first round match in three sets. Next up a more tricky prospect - Andre Medvedev. He will need to play better if he is to come through this test but I would hope that Tim has his motivation to win back! Final score against Bastl 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. 4 October - Tim back at the top - but for how long? Tim and Greg have swapped places in the rankings again. Tim is back at 6 whilst Greg has fallen to 8 (Rios is 7). Both players are in Basel this week where Tim hopes to defend his points last year when he won the tournament and beat Andre Agassi in the final. Tim has been drawn against Georg Bastl in the first round of the tournament and plays tomorrow night (Tuesday). He follows Agassi onto court and the match is due to be on Eurosport/British Eurosport. (Greg and the other seeds are due to play Wednesday). 26 September - Great Britain preserve their place in the elite Both Tim and Greg won their singles rubbers to leave David Lloyd with his job and with Britain in a strong position inthe World Group for next year. As soon as we have news of where the next tie will be HOME or AWAY, we will be thinking about another group outing.!!!!!! Remember HENMAGIC groups are famous for those air horns, chants, stamping feet and making the most noise and having a really good time. If you would like to join us for future ties, please be in touch. Send me an email and I will log your interest! THE DRAW IS UP FOR TOULOUSE. Tim has got to play a Qualifier in Round 1 and then either Nicolas Escude or another Qualifier in Round 2. More updates on the message board when I manage to get to a computer. 26 September - All to play for on the final day Tim and Neil had obviously decided before the doubles even started that they were on a hiding to nothing where the doubles rubber were concerned. Although both players did produce some good spells, they could not maintain the pressure against two players from South Africa, Adams and de Jager who play together on the ATP Tour regularly. Their experience showed as they took the British pair in straight sets. Tim will be on court today at 2 pm against Neville Godwin and this is a must win match because Greg is not 100% fit and may be doubtful for the final rubber. IF YOU ARE COMING - DON'T FORGET TO BRING NOISY THINGS - AIR HORNS, WHISTLES, DRUMS, TRUMPETS.......... Whatever happens, Tim will be heading for Toulouse late tonight or tomorrow morning in time for his first round match, whilst Greg should be heading for Munich and his first match in the Grand Slam Cup against Gustavo Kuerten. 25 September - GREAT BRITAIN LEAD 2-0 Tim and Greg both did the honours yesterday to put GB into a brilliant position in their World Group Play-Off Tie in Birmingham. The crowd (us) did their bit and the air horns, whistles and cheering raised the rafters in the NIA. Greg got things off to a good start by beating Neville Godwin in four sets and then Tim put himself in the firing line again and came up trumps, beating Grant Stafford in three sets. 24 September - Davis Cup starts today Greg starts the ball rolling at 3 pm today against Neville Godwin. Then Tim will be at centre stage against Grant Stafford. More news tomorrow. 12 September - Davis Cup News here shortly For the British fans, Tim's appearance in Birmingham next week will be the last time that we will have to see him this year. Let's make it really special. Hopefully Tim will just about still be ranked British No.1. I know I should know the mathematics but my brain can't really take it all in at present - I am just getting over the shock of seeing Serena Williams winning in New York and Greg losing from that winning position against Martin. What a week. Back to Davis Cup - Tim and Greg will need all our support as they try to beat the South Africans and remain in the World Group for next year. It should be a walkover - but let us not forget that SA have one of the best doubles teams in the world in Adams and De Jager and may yet put a spanner in the works. Bring your loud cheering voices, flags, banners and air horns if you can get them and let us give the boys a really good welcome when they walk on next Friday. 5 September - A Happy Birthday to Tim for Monday Although Tim would prefer not to be in England at the moment, especially with most of the seeds out of the US Open, he will be able to enjoy his birthday for once without the pressure of having to play the next day. Maybe he will have a drink or two!!! I think it is probably not a good thing to dwell on the Canas affair. It was incredibly depressing to watch and Tim looked very lonely on the court. He will have to work things out in his mind very quickly or he will be falling down the rankings like Pat Rafter.... 30 August - Tim not due to begin US Open until Tuesday at earliest Tim will not have to play until at least Tuesday because his opponent, Guillaume Canas reached the doubles final in Boston last week. Because of work commitments, all updates will be appearing on the Message Board this week as I will be unable to get to my "freeserve" computer! 26 August - Tim draws Canas in first round of US Open Tim has been seeded 6th for the US Open which starts in 5 day's time - on Monday 30th August. He has been drawn in the bottom half of the draw and will avoid many of the top hard court players in the opening rounds. His first round opponent is Guillermo Canas from Argentina. He probably faces a second round match against Vince Spadea who reached the final in Indianapolis last week. The first seeded player which Tim could face is Richard Krajicek in the 4th Round. I don't really want to speculate about further matches so we will see what happens soon. 20 August - Tim loses out again to Kroslak After a fairly tight match against Dutchman Peter Wessels which he won in 2 close sets, Tim came up against one of his nemises players yesterday. After taking an early lead and the first set, Tim went down in 3 sets. Not the sort of preparation that Tim would have liked for the US Open but then again he is fit and healthy unlike many of the Top players including Pat and Greg whose latest tendonitis injuries could leave them with problems over the next month. 18 August - Tim to play Wessels Tim will play Peter Wessels in his opening match in Washington later today. This should be quite an easy opener for Tim in his final tournament before the US Open. 15 August - Washington news Tim has been seeded 3 in Washington this week. He has a bye in the opening round and will face either an American wild card or Peter Wessels in Round 2. His draw is pretty good this week so let's hope for confidence building victories. More news will follow when available. 14 August - Victories for Tim - what a relief! Tim finally has a few matches under his belt in the lead up to the US Open. Having beaten Van Lottum in his first match this week, Tim posted a really well deserved victory over in-form German, Nicolas Kiefer before coming up against Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the quarters. Unfortunately, Yev was playing just too well and won in straight sets. However, all is not lost and with the tournament in Washington this week, I am sure Tim will get that all important practice (as well as matches) before he takes next week off to prepare for the US Open. 8 August - Cincinnatti Draw As usual for Tim, he has a bye in the first round. His second round match against either Van Lottum or a Qualifier. (No sign of Jim Courier for at least a few rounds!!) Tim will have to start winning matches soon or else....... Greg will be overtaking him OR even worse.... Jim bloody Courier will! (Apology for swearing!) 6 August - Courier strikes again! That man is really getting to annoy me (and I mean JC!). Yet again, Tim lost out at the hands of Jimbo "Rowing Boat" Courier. This time it was 3 sets and Tim blamed his loss on the fact that he had a bye in the first round and JC did not. Perhaps he was right. 1 August - Canadian Open draw Tim is seeded 4 in Montreal behind Rafter, Agassi and Kafelnikov. He has a bye in the first round but will face fearsome opposition in Round 2 - Jim Courier or Rainer Schuttler. No one will have forgotten the last two matches between Tim and Jimbo! Go GB!!!!!! Keep an eye on the Message Board, as well as this page, for updates on progress over the coming weeks. 28 July - Tim defeated in LA Tim lost in the first round of the Mercedes Benz Cup in Los Angeles this week. He was beaten by Frenchman Guillaume Raoux 6-4, 7-6 and will have plenty of time to practice before the Canadian Open in Montreal which starts next week. 27 July - Tim up to No.5 in the World Tim moved into the top 5 in the world for the first time yesterday. Although not having played since Wimbledon, Tim moved above Guga Kuerten as the Brazilian did not defend his points for winning the tournament in Stuttgart last week. 24 July - Tim returns to ATP action this week in Los Angeles Henners is due to be seeded 3rd in LA this week, behind Agassi and Sampras. He reached the final last year so has quite a number of points to defend. The player line-up is good so let's hope Tim can celebrate his engagement in style - with loads of victories as the Tour gears up for the last grand slam of this century - in New York in 6 weeks' time. 22 July - Engagement confirmed by Tim! 21 July - Tim to marry Lucy! The Express and Mail both have a front page news item this morning that says that Tim and Lucy have decided to get married. It appears Tim popped the question whilst the couple were on holiday in Tuscany after the trials and tribulations of Wimbledon.. Let's hope that Tim's engagement will have a positive effect on his tennis over the coming months. Let's wish them all the best for the future. 15 July - A HUGE WELCOME TO ALL NEW HENMAGIC MEMBERS I realise that this item isn't technically Tim Henman News but here it is anyway! I just want to take this opportunity of welcoming all the new Henmagic members to the Club. With Tim having such a good grasscourt season (in fact he had a brilliant clay court season as well), new member subscriptions have been coming in almost quicker than I can deal with them. I hope you all enjoy being part of Henmagic and if you ever want any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by post, email or even telephone. (Contact details on the back cover of newsletters!) Thank you for supporting Henmagic and helping it grow bigger and bigger. (And for any of you who might be thinking about joining, please email me directly if you have any questions!) 5 July - Wimbledon Round Up / Looking Forward Well what can I say? Although Tim's Wimbledon eventually ended at the hands of Pete Sampras AGAIN, he did Great Britain proud with some superb tennis as well as much grit and determination to reach the Semi Finals again. Other than Pistol Pete of course, Tim was one of the few players who successfully defended their points from last year. Andre Agassi and Pat Rafter fought out the other semi for the right to be crowned the new No.1 player in the World. The rain did not help Tim's cause for the title but it must be remembered that he overcame quite a number of demons when he triumphed over Jim Courier - coming back from 3 match points down again (aka the Kafelnikov match) - which took some nerve! Tim will now take a break from the tour for a couple of weeks. The rackets have been stashed away and he will no doubt be brandishing some golf clubs for the next few days before he returns to competitive tennis in Los Angeles on 26th July. His ranking remains at 6 but there are many chances to improve on this as the Tour moves to the US hardcourt season. 19 June - Wimbledon latest / BBC Documentary I hope that all you Tim fans enjoyed the BBC documentary shown over lunchtime today. A treat for all Tim fans. Copies of the 30 minute programme are available through the Henmagic Video Library (Fan Club members only). 15 June - Tim is now officially 2nd Favourite for Wimbledon The draw for the men's singles at Wimbledon has been completed. Tim is due to play Frenchman Arnaud di Pasquale which should be quite a simple affair for him. (Sargsian or Woodruff await him in Round 2 - and for those Henmagic members amongst you - Chris will be shortly joining Jerome in the Henmagic Jail!!!!!) The first seed he is likely to face would be Carlos Moya in the 4th Round and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the Quarters. However it is more likely that Tim will face other opposition at those stages because neither Carlos or Yev have been playing too well! A possible Semi against Pete (a rematch for last weekend) awaits further on. Some other juicy 1st round encounters - Becker/Maclagen, Sampras/Draper, Rusedski/Stoltenberg, Malisse/Philippoussis and the list goes on....... 14 June - The Wimbledon Seeding Committee Rules Tim has been granted No.6 seeding position for Wimbledon which starts next week. (Greg has been seeded 9). Unfortunately, Tim did not go up in the rankings after his fine performance yesterday and with 3 former champions above him, he could not really expect to be seeded above his ranking position. Possibly this is a cunning plan for Tim and Pete not to meet until at least the semis.... or even the final! (See Robin's message on the board!) 14 June - Tim loses - but makes Pete play like a World No.1 to win! What a match! For nearly 3 hours, Tim fought valiently to become the first Brit to win the Stella Artois Championships. He was up against the World No.1 and probably the undisputed grasscourt player of all time and it was so close. It came down to one lucky lob in the final set tie break to separate them. Afterwards Pete paid tribute to Tim and said he was probably the greatest threat to his Wimbledon crown. No one has done the double of Queens and Wimbledon since Boris Becker in 1985 and so maybe Pete has peaked too early. He had to play his best tennis of the year to beat that Aussie sensation Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday and then had to come up with something better yesterday. Let's hope Tim can gain revenge in 3 weeks time when the stakes are higher for Sampras! I understand that Tim may be able to gain some revenge on his American "mate" today when the two of them play off on the golf course. On the radio today - Pete said "Tim is a much better golfer" so maybe they should take the court at Wimbledon with folf clubs rather than tennis rackets!!!!!!!! 12 June - Pete through but Tim posed to join him When the rain rudely interupted play for a second time today, Tim was a set up and a break up in the second set and looked good. The score 6-1, 3-2 with Tim about to serve. AND THEN THE RAIN CAME DOWN!!!! Play due to start again at Queens at 11.00 am Sunday morning with the final due to start at 2 pm (weather permitting!) 11 June - Queens Progress - Tim into the Semis After a slight scare in his opening match against Cecil Mamiit, Tim has stormed through the draw (beating Mamiit, Byron Black, and today, Karol Kucera) to put himself into the Last 4 with Sargis Sargsian, Pete Sampras and Aussie sensation Lleyton Hewitt. Personally I can't wait for tomorrow when Tim takes on Sargis Sargsian for a place in the final against probably Sampras (however I would not put it past Hewitt from beating Pete - after all he has beaten Mark P this week!!!!!!!!!!!). A Tim/Pete final or a Tim/Lleyton final for that matter would be so mouthwatering........!!!! Have seen a sneak preview of this documentary programme on Tim and much of what I saw was filmed in Rome. I recognised much of the background and I was there.....!!!! 5 June - Queens Draw & Tim appearance on TV Tim has a reasonable draw at the Stella Artois Championships. He has a bye in the opening round and will not play until Tuesday at the earliest. He will play the winner between Cecil Mamiit (US) and Axel Pretsch (Ger). Seeded 3, he is in Pete Sampras' side of the draw. The top seed there is Yevgeny Kafelnikov who will make a first appearance at Queens. TIM ON TV - WARNING. Tim will be appearing in a BBC documentary programme about the ATP Tour which will be shown on Saturday 19th June at 1 pm. (I think it will be on Grandstand - BBC1, but it may be on BBC2). I will let you know for definite once I know. 31 May - French Open Tim, seeded 7, very nearly lived up to his seeding expectation. After two very good victories against known experienced clay courters, Karim Alami and Jiri Novak, Tim was two sets and a break up against Alberto Berasategui of Spain before the little guy from Andorra came back and wore Tim down. I just hope that Tim will not take defeat to Alberto too badly - I know I was deflated - and all those ATP Tour wins on clay (7 wins to 5 losses) will stand him in very good stead as the tour heads back to England and the grass of Wimbledon. Even though Tim has now done what he has never been able to achieve before - gain some victories at Roland Garros - his ranking will still probably stay roughly the same, depending on how everyone else does. The fact that Moya, Krajicek, Sampras and Kafelnikov lost early might mean that Tim might move up. 31 May - Clay Court Round Up As you probably have guessed, Robin did not manage to breathe any life into laptop and my own workhorse finally came to a grinding halt just before the French started. However, I have managed to get back up and running again and hopefully the updates on this page will start to flow again. I won't promise every day - but hopefully two or three times a week... Tim had a wonderful run at Hamburg where he had his best run on clay ever by reaching the Quarter Finals - in fact the first time he had two straight wins on the red stuff. He beat Franco Squillari and Mariano Puerta before losing to another Argentinian Mariano Zabaletta who went on to reach the final. At Rome, Tim again scored two wins against Daniel Vacek and Jan Siemerink before succumbing to Karol Kucera in a match that he really should have won. The Brits certainly made their presence felt at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf. Although they were definitely in the most difficult group including Spain, Sweden and Germany, Tim and Greg played well to win the doubles rubbers against Germany and Spain and although Tim did not manage to win any of his three singles matches, he gained much needed experience against three very good clay courters and tested his progress to such an extent against Tommy Haas, Carlos Moya and Thomas Enqvist that he went into the French Open with renewed confidence and the thought that maybe the British flag would fly longer than usual. 3 May - BRITS ON THE MARCH AGAIN Tim and Greg are in action today in the doubles tournament. In only their second ATP Tournament playing together, they will play Meligini and Montana. Tim (and Greg) has a bye in the first round of the singles competition - he will play either Franco Squillari (the winner in Munich last weekend) or Hendrick Dreekman. That match will no doubt be played tomorrow. With my laptop still out, you will have to watch the message board for my updates... Thankfully, Robin is going to try to breathe life into laptop this week so we will see what happens.... 25 April - DOUBLES TOURNAMENT VICTORY !!! ON CLAY??!!!! Tim has finally broken his duck in clay court tournament victories in Doubles at least. Today, with Olivier Delaitre, Tim triumphed against Czech pair Novak and Rikl - 6-2, 6-3. Well done Tim! I think you have now more than earned your week's rest!!! More of the same - in singles too please!!!! 24 April - Close but no Cigar in Singles - but Success in Doubles?!!.... Tim has had mixed success on the clay at Monte Carlo. He failed to beat Brazilian Fernando Meligini - although he did have a match point, but there has been better news in the Doubles event! In partnership with Olivier Delaitre, Timbo has reached his first final on clay. After disposing of Golmard in Round 1 (how does it feel Tim to finally beat that bloody Frenchman again?), Tim and Olivier have won 3 more matches and plays the final tomorrow against Novak and Rikl. Full results for the week below. SF - Henman/Delaitre bt Johnson/Suk - 6-4, 7-5 QF - Henman/Delaitre bt Gaudenzi/Nargiso - 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 2R - Henman/Delaitre bt Kafelnikov/Woodforde - 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5) 1R - Henman/Delaitre bt Golmard/Clement - 6-4, 6-2 (Hurray!!!!!!!) Tim is due to have a week off next week before he is due to play in events in Hamburg, Rome, Dusseldorf (the World Team Cup with Greg) and then the big one at Roland Garos. David Felgate has been quoted in the English press this week as saying that Tim is close to doing really well at a clay court event at Singles and I for one agree with him. GO FOR IT TIM! 17 April - Monte Carlo starts Monday.... With my laptop still laid up (maybe its terminal!!), you will have to keep an eye on the Message Board for news updates. Tim will be back on the clay at Monte Carlo starting Monday and hopefully we shall hear about more wins. With no points to defend, there is no pressure!!!!!! |
